Most trips go over budget in the same three places: the flight booked too late, the hotel booked on the wrong night, and the small daily costs nobody adds up. Deciding the shape of the trip before you book anything fixes most of it.
Write down what the whole trip may cost — travel, stay, food, local transport and one or two paid experiences. Working backwards from a total keeps a cheap flight from quietly pulling the rest of the budget upward.
Shifting a departure by a day or two often saves more than dropping a night or a destination. Search a range of dates first, then decide.
A room you only sleep in is rarely worth the upgrade. The same money spent on a guided day or a better location usually shows up more in how the trip felt.
Keep roughly a tenth of the budget unspent. It covers the taxi you did not plan for, and it is what stops a small change of plan from becoming a decision about money.
